Session Title: Rethinking How We Teach Computer Skills Across the Curriculum

Presenter: Yacob Abdi (Wright College)

Date and Time: June 10, 2022 from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m.

Description: This presentation challenges the current way computer skills are taught, which is around a specific software application. Often, instructional time is spent introducing students to various features and tools the application offers. Students are expected to apply these features immediately for schoolwork and through college.

However, teaching students deeper, more strategic concepts rather than features has a bigger impact on their life-long computer skills. Unlike teaching features, teaching concepts does not tell students how to accomplish specific tasks, but it helps students predict outcomes, identify patterns, and understand why things are the way they are. These are invaluable skills students can take far beyond college.

This presentation demonstrates how to incorporate three main conceptual elements—search, file management, and troubleshooting—to show how they improve student understanding.
