Session Title: Teaching Competency Essential Skills in Adult Education

Presenter: Francisco Javier Salas (Wright College)

Date and Time: June 10, 2022 from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m.

Description: In recent years, new teaching methods have been developed to enhance students’ abilities and aptitudes beyond memorizing. This presentation discusses competency-based learning, a form of teaching that is spreading due to its cognitive and emotional benefits. The world we know is undergoing a structural change. The Internet, migratory processes, and the way we relate to each other have changed, and adult education does not escape this.

Today, the concept of competencies is very well-rooted in corporate human resources and is closely linked to performance. Because adult education students are often job-motivated, focusing on competencies rather than tests is important. Passing High School Equivalency (HSE) tests is their immediate goal, but we should also prepare students and strengthen the skills they will need to reach better opportunities.
