This event is one of sixteen dynamic breakout sessions that make up Innovate ’22, the City Colleges of Chicago Adult Education Conference taking place on June 10, 2022.

Session Title: Tips, Tools & Tactics for Creating Community in Hybrid ABE/ASE Classes

Presenter: Trudy Moore and Linda Flannigan (Malcolm X College)

Date and Time: June 10, 2022 from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m.

Description: This dynamic presentation for language arts educators deals primarily with reading and writing. The presentation’s focus is to give educators tips for making their hybrid classes engaging and interesting, ultimately causing students to want to remain in class and boosting retention. How teachers can employ technology tools as well as their imagination and creativity to get all students actively involved in the learning process will be demonstrated.

Educators can use many activities, including a first-day ice breaker called "To Tell the Truth,” where students cast an electronic vote to figure out which one of three statements about a classmate is true. “Writing Relay” is an activity in which teams of students set the timers on their phones and race against the clock to come up with the perfect introduction to an essay. Students also can set up a class Group Chat or even create a class Facebook page to keep up with what’s going on, taking an active role in posting their thoughts or ideas on various assignments.

These and other fun strategies to foster a collaborative atmosphere and a sense of community with positive outcomes on students’ educational goals will be shared and discussed.
