Platos Unidos (United Plates)

Did you know that African culture influenced many Latin American dishes? Latin American countries were colonized mainly by Spain, Portugal, France and England. These countries enslaved over 11 million Africans in Latin America.

Because of this, Africa influenced Latin American social, racial, economic, cultural and culinary diversity. We cannot celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month without celebrating its African roots.

As we close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we invite you to join Chef Gabriel Alvarez and students of the Kennedy-King College Washburne Culinary and Hospitality Institute as they honor African roots in Latin American dishes. Come enjoy and celebrate cuisine from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and other Hispanic and Latino countries.
