Technical Standards: A Leadership Introduction

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce technical standards as clearly defined academic and professional requirements—not informal judgments about who appears capable of succeeding in a program. The session would establish a district-wide leadership framework before individual departments begin reviewing or developing standards.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish technical standards from admissions preferences, course objectives, academic standards, and general statements about physical ability.
  • Identify the characteristics of an essential, observable, program-related technical standard.
  • Explain how technical standards interact with reasonable accommodations and the individualized review process.
  • Identify the dean’s responsibility for guiding program review, faculty consultation, documentation, and Access Center involvement.
