Margie
For years, Margie hoped to earn her GED. At one point, she enrolled at Richard J. Daley College, but like many adult learners balancing responsibilities, she had to put her education on hold.
Liz-Anne De Beauville-Jones is a first-generation college student from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. After moving to Chicago, the Olive-Harvey College student says she found a strong community at the college.
“My favorite thing about going to Olive-Harvey College is the supportive community that I met there,” Liz-Anne said. “Every person that I encountered embraced me, and they made me feel safe. They made me feel welcomed. They made me feel like they would fight for me. They made me feel like I had something to give.”
While studying philosophy and participating in the Timuel D. Black Jr. Scholarship and Fellowship program, Liz-Anne became became heavily involved on campus. She was president of OHC’s Student Government Association, vice chair of the District Student Government Association, a work-study student in the First Year Experience Department, an Equity and Excellence intern, a Presidential Scholar, a founding member of the Christian Club, and more.
Even while managing various responsibilities, Liz-Anne maintained a 4.0 GPA, was awarded several scholarships, and served her neighborhood by volunteering for a clean-up campaign. For these accolades and others, she was recognized as salutatorian and a 2024 Luminary Award recipient.
Next, Liz-Anne plans to transfer to a four-year school to earn her bachelor’s degree. Her future goals include earning her Ph.D., becoming a published author, and continuing to serve her community.
